Blackman MS - Washington DC 2026

Join the 8th grade class at Blackman Middle School for a 5 day adventure where you’ll see history come to life. Your student will finish out 8th grade exploring and learning around the Nation’s Capitol – connecting with what they’ve learned all year in class. They will walk the halls of the US Capitol Building, marvel at Smithsonian Museums, and hear the stories of the best memorials the city has to offer. American History comes to life in DC!

PROPOSED ITINERARY

🏞️ Day 1: From the Hills to History

  • Early Departure: Wheels up from Tennessee – Adventure calls! We hit the road bright and early, ready to chase history through the rolling hills of Virginia.
  • Natural Bridge State Park: Wonder Beneath Our Feet – Stand beneath one of nature’s great masterpieces. On a guided ranger-led walk, students explore the monumental stone arch and stories that span centuries—from Indigenous legend to Thomas Jefferson’s awe.
  • Welcome to Charlottesville, VA – enjoy dinner and then check into the hotel.

🏛️ Day 2: Founding Ideas & Modern Defenders

  • Monticello: Contradictions of Freedom – Explore Thomas Jefferson’s estate with a lens on leadership, innovation, and the deep complexities of American liberty. Students will reflect on how ideals and realities collide.
  • Michie Tavern Colonial Feast: Dine like it’s 1784. Students enjoy a classic Southern buffet in a tavern that’s witnessed three centuries of change.
  • Pentagon 9/11 Memorial: Courage Remembered – A powerful tribute to the lives lost and lessons learned, this solemn site introduces the theme of modern sacrifice and service.
  • The Promise of Liberty: MLK Jr., FDR & Thomas Jefferson Memorials – A guided evening experience exploring complex legacies and evolving ideals, from freedom of speech to freedom from want—through the lens of inclusion and justice.

🎓 Day 3: Voices, Vision & Vigilance

  • Morning Monuments: A guided morning experience at the Washington Monument and World War II Memorial, designed to spark reflection on America’s ideals as we celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary.
  • Smithsonian Museum of African American History & Culture – An immersive afternoon at one of the most powerful museums in the world, exploring America’s Civil Rights journey through story, art, and lived experience.
  • Capitol Hill Experience: Democracy in Action – Walk in the footsteps of change-makers with guided and self-guided experiences at the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, and Supreme Court, paired with a special visit to the new Shakespeare Exhibit!
  • Illuminated Evening Memorial Tour: The “Big 3” — A twilight exploration of Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial, framed through the enduring tension between American ideals and lived realities.

🕊️ Day 4: Service, Spirit & Smithsonian Explorers

  • Voices of Valor: Arlington National Cemetery Tribute Tour – A meaningful, personalized walk through history, focusing on specific individuals or service stories.
  • Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial visit and then a scatter lunch at Western Market.
  • See the White House Exterior and hear a story or two in Lafayette Park.
  • Your Choice of Smithsonian Museums – We’ve designed a variety of engaging “Smithsonian Scavenger Adventures” – dynamic, focused, student-led group explorations of the museums, tailored to personal interests, curiosity, and group themes. Enjoy 2+ hours on the National Mall to explore at your pace. (TripAdventures Signature Experience)
  • Cultural Spotlight Evening: We’ll spend the final evening together at a fun unique activity in DC – think a baseball game, haunted tour, music performance, Kennedy Center show, or similar! Options will be presented later this fall.

🎓 Day 5: Leadership & Legacy

  • Presidential Legacy Journey: Mount Vernon – Explore George Washington’s estate with interactive storytelling focused on leadership, legacy, and complexity.
  • Old Town Alexandria Explorer Walk – A charming stroll through cobblestone streets and colonial history.
  • Depart for Home and enjoy a the journey back through the Blue Ridge Mountains!

About YOUR group leader

Your lead Tour Director will be Devon Spieker, the Director of Operations at TripAdventures. He has nearly 10 years of experience leading various types of guided tours. He loves sharing his experience, stories, and energy with the newest generation of travelers.

Prior to his current role with TripAdventures, he lived in Washington DC for just over 5 years working as a full time Tour Director focused on educational travel to DC. Today, he uses his experience from being on the ground to plan incredible adventures for middle and high school students around the world. 

Devon was the Tour Director for Blackman Middle School’s 2025 trip and is excited to bring the 2026 graduating class back to his favorite city!

  • We encourage you to pay by bank transfer, which is extremely easy to set up. The tour price is based on paying directly from your bank; paying by credit card will incur an extra 2.9% fee (charged by the processor).

Preferred Travel Protection Plan

  • We offer travel insurance as part of travel protection plans from our partner TripAssure.
  • To cover you for the unforeseen, we encourage participants to purchase travel insurance, which may include benefits for trip cancellation, trip interruption, missed connection, travel delay, medical expense/emergency evacuation, baggage and personal effects, baggage delay and more. 
  • Covid-19 and its various strains are treated the same as any other Sickness under the travel protection plan.
  • TripAssure offers the Basic, Deluxe Plan and Deluxe Plus Plan options. Familiarize yourself with the
    contents of each plan to ensure to get the one that best suits your needs. 
  • The travel protection plan that includes “Cancel for any reason” coverage must be purchased within 21 days of enrollment with your deposit.
